Supporting Veterans and Their Families in Pittsburgh
Alcoa Technical Center recently presented a $20,000 Alcoa Foundation grant to CONTACT Pittsburgh to help launch a veterans hotline to serve soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their family members. In addition to providing a source of information, reassurance and referral for returning veterans, the program will also be available to veterans' families who need support while their loved ones are deployed.
Wenatchee's "Support Our Troops" Campaign
Through the "Support Our Troops" campaign at Alcoa's Wenatchee, Wa., facility, volunteers have raised more than $50,000 and shipped more than 1,250 care packages to local service members who are serving overseas. The packages include snacks, toiletries, clothing, movies, books and toys that soldiers can provide to local children in an effort to gain their trust.
But their commitment does not stop with the troops. Wenatchee Works employees also assist the families left behind. The services they offer have included cutting and splitting firewood, repairing a car transmission, helping families move and hosting a holiday party featuring gifts for the children of deployed soldiers.
Alcoa and the Army: Working Together for Safer Facilities
As one of the first major companies to make employee health and safety an integral part of its corporate culture, Alcoa retains a world-class network of environmental, health and safety (EHS) experts. The U.S. Army shares these values with Alcoa. That's why the Army welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Alcoa on best practices to prevent ergonomic injuries and reduce respiratory and environmental health risks for employees working in its vehicle maintenance facility at the Red River Depot in Texas. Alcoa's EHS experts traveled to Red River and spent several days working on site with their Army peers to offer a fresh set of eyes and insights on developing a safer working environment. We are committed to our defense partners and their safety both on the battlefield and in the supply chain.
